Which IICRC standards apply to water and mold work?

ANSI/IICRC S500 is the standard for professional water damage restoration, now in its fifth edition (2021). ANSI/IICRC S520 covers mold remediation, updated in 2024. Technicians can earn the IICRC Water Damage Restoration Technician (WRT) certification.

These standards define how to classify water, set up drying, and remove mold safely. We look for professionals whose crews are trained to them.

How does Florida license mold work?

Florida regulates mold assessment and remediation over 10 square feet under Chapter 468, Part XVI of the Florida Statutes. The Department of Business and Professional Regulation issues separate Mold Assessor and Mold Remediator licenses.

  • Licenses require an exam plus education or documented field experience (Section 468.8413)
  • An assessor can’t remediate a home they assessed within 12 months, and the reverse (Section 468.8419)

Which Florida insurance rules affect your job?

  • Notice of a new claim within 1 year of the loss, supplemental claims within 18 months (Section 627.70132)
  • No assignment of benefits on policies issued since January 1, 2023 (Section 627.7152)
  • Many policies exclude leaks that ran 14 days or more
